Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Performance

In coastal areas it is common for various activities to co-exist within any one area.  This means that it is important for port companies such as ABP to play an active role in integrated coastal zone management (ICZM).  ICZM has evolved to bring together elements of the UK’s planning, social, economic and nature-conservation forums with the common aim of achieving an integrated strategy for the use of the coastal zone.  We have set performance targets for this aspect of environmental management to ensure we maintain a strong commitment to ICZM.  The table below shows the commitments we have set and our progress:

Assist in the running of the management plan schemes established for the Humber, Orwell, Severn and Solent European Marine Sites Completed ABP Personnel continue to be involved in progress and operational issues  for the Management Plans

Head Office - ABP act as the representative for UKMPG ( UK Major Ports Group ) on the DEFRA Review of Marine Nature Conservation Group (RMNC). UKMPG have made representations to DEFRA that ports must be acknowleged in the future strategic management of estuaries

Port of Grimsby – ABP sits on the "Bathing Water Liaison Group" for the Humber, which is working towards achieving Blue Flag status for Cleethorpes Beach.

Port of Barrow – Has an active involvement in the Morecambe Bay Management Group, a voluntary organisation aimed at ensuring sustainable use of the Bay and protection of nature conservation interests.

Port of Southampton - is a Steering Group Member for the Solent Forum, an organisation which provides strategic advice on planning, environmental and legislative matters in the Solent and aims to promote awareness and understanding of other stakeholders' roles.
