Estate Management Performance

ABP owns a large amount of land throughout its 21 ports, much of which is close to areas of very high conservation value, which are protected by EU designation under the Birds and Habitats Directives.  The Company also owns land which is designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by English Nature (Natural England)under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

We believe that there are considerable opportunities for improving our site management through mechanisms which discourage the illegal dumping of waste and promote landscaping and conservation management.  We will continue to explore opportunities to develop this through the achievement of objectives.  The table below shows the commitments we have set and our progress:

Port of Fleetwood - In partnership with the local Council, ABP has initiated a programme of shrub and tree planting alongside a public footpath which runs along part of the port

Port of CardiffHas undertaken a port enhacement programme, including planting of mature trees, use of recycled stone from dock walls for landscaping; planted foxgloves and Primroses; installed hedgehog houses and fox dens incorporated into flowerbeds; placed logs to encourage beetles, insects and small animals

Port of Newport – Has established a 'housekeeping' committee which meets on a regular basis to discuss and implement estate enhancement measures.

Port of Ayr – The port participates in an annual voluntary river clean-up project to remove rubbish and litter from a nearby river that runs through the town of Ayr.
