Protecting the Environment wins Kudos for South Wales Ports 

Environmental Awareness Performance


Trying to promote an environmental message within a company as geographically and operationally diverse as ABP is a major challenge.  We are aiming to get the message across to all members of staff that the work they do can have an impact on the environment in which they live, work and play.  We have developed targets for improving environmental awareness throughout the Company.  The table below shows the commitments we have set and our progress:

Continue to promote environmental awareness campaign throughout the group

An environmental newsletter is issued to all employees and a full environmental intranet service is available.

Guidance Notes on key topics to help deliver the EMF have been issued to all ports - subjects are now audited by the Sustainable Development Department.

Environmental issues are now reported monthly to the Operational Board

Continue to disseminate and raise awareness of environmental information and practices using the intranet and Guidance Notes. 

Prepare in-house information to assess the potential environmental impacts and requirements for the handling of all cargoes Completed Guidance document on regulatory matters and best practice manual available on intranet

Promote environmental awareness to all staff in the Company and encourage as many positive environmental enhancement projects as possible.

All ports - Waste management training has taken place for personnel with waste managemen responsibilities

All ports: Environment Co-ordinators receive the introductory Ports Environmental Training (PET) programme to increase their environmental knowledge and awareness

All Ports: An environmental induction presentation for all new employees has been in place since 2004

Port of Southampton -Southampton also introduced an email-based invoice system in 2004 reducing paper usage, postage and printing costs. The cost savings are estimated to be about £20k per year and the scheme is to be adopted for all ports.

Port of Silloth – The port participates in a local environmental awareness campaign for business.  In 2000 the port was awarded a ‘Gold Award’ in recognition of the port’s good environmental policies, health & safety and business purpose.

 South Wales Ports - An Energy Team was established to tackle environmental resources with the assistance of the Government funded Carbon Trust. This exercise has now been extended to all UK locations.
