Protecting the Environment wins Kudos for South Wales Ports

Air Quality Performance

Our ports are statutory ports and are generally obliged to handle any lawful cargo.  This means that our ports handle a number of cargoes that are known to have a potential impact on air quality, such as grain and coal, through the creation of dust.  It is important, therefore, that we set objectives to demonstrate how we are improving our management of air quality.  The table below shows the objectives and initiatives and our progress:

Air Quality Objectives

Progress to Date

Action

Continue to monitor dust at ports as appropriate and implement recommendations from the Environmental Risk Register process

Dust monitoring mechanisms are in place at all appropriate locations Port of Immingham – ABP has installed a comprehensive dust monitoring system throughout the port estate.  The system ensures that if any potentially dusty cargoes are handled, the levels of dust are monitored.  If levels rise above acceptable levels, dust control measures are implemented
Participate in discussions to assist the government with its ratification and implementation of the requirements of MARPOL VI - The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships Ongoing

Other initiatives

Port of Garston – The port handles potentially dusty cargoes and have planted a break of trees along the port boundary in order to reduce any dust emissions

Port of Newport – ABP has undertaken planting of tree screens adjacent to dusty cargo-handling areas to create screens.  The majority of the trees are now well established and provide an effective dust mitigation measure

The table will be updated as progress continues against each target.
