An Environmental Organisation

As with health and safety, our Chief Executive, Peter Jones, has ultimate responsibility for the development, implementation and delivery of our environmental policies.  The head of each business unit is responsible for environmental matters relating to the operations under their management.

Our Sustainable Development team is headed by our Sustainable Development Manager, Peter Barham, with support from Sustainable Development Officer Alex Pepper.  The team supports the Chief Executive in the development and implementation of appropriate policies, systems and targets in accordance with our Environmental Management Framework (EMF).

Peter Barham, Sustainable Development Manager

The Sustainable Development Manager reports directly to the main ABP board every month.  All of our business units have a nominated Environment Co-ordinator who acts as the focus for local environmental issues and reporting, including the collection of key environmental performance data.  Additionally, the Co-ordinators’ role is to act as the interface between the development of the group’s policy and its implementation throughout the business.  As a minimum, all of our Environment Co-ordinators attend an introductory-level environmental training course.  Training across a wide range of environmental subjects, ranging from introductory programmes to more specialised areas such as waste management and port development, is available for all employees as appropriate.

ABP works regularly with ABP Marine Environmental Research (ABPmer), a subsidiary consultancy company with over 50 years' experience of providing specialist consultancy services on coastal, estuarine and riverine developments and conservation projects.  ABPmer has particular expertise in assessing the impacts that new developments may have on hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes and offers a full range of services to develop optimum solutions to various management issues, including navigation, mooring and dredging.  For further information, visit the ABPmer website - www.abpmer.co.uk.

The lines of responsibility for environmental management are shown in an organisational diagram:
