Climate Change

We recognise that every business in the UK needs to look at how to cut their greenhouse-gas emissions in order to help reduce the future impacts of climate change.  This is a particularly pertinent topic for us as a ports company as we operate in coastal areas and the future impacts of sea level rise resulting from climate change may become increasingly obvious at our ports.

Over the past two years, we have undertaken monitoring of our greenhouse gas emissions.  In 2002, our 21 UK ports produced 46,410 tonnes of CO2 emissions.  This was predominantly from electricity and fuel consumption that is essential to keep the ports operating successfully.  However, we recognise our responsibility to play an active role in reducing emissions and we are currently exploring ways of doing this.  As a result, we have set a target (add link to target) ) for reducing like-for-like CO2 emissions across our 21 ports by two per cent in 2003.   In addition, we shall be extending our monitoring to cover our UK transport operations, as well as our USA ports and transport operations.

To see the legislation that governs our management of climate change in the ports and how we have translated this into environment policy objectives, refer to the Climate Change page in the Legislation section.
